A flowery day

Wanna guess where I was today???
What did I see???

 Desert Roses in all colours.....

  ....and sizes.
 Double Desert Roses

 Upon my word......

.......I did say all kinds of colours didn't I?

 Crown of thorns

 Wide assortment of succulents

 Vegetable and herb garden.

 Overflowing with wholesome goodness.

Ground orchids blooming profusely after the few showers that we were blessed with this week.

I came away with lots of goodies including these delicious looking mangoes.

Have you guessed yet?
That's right.....I paid a visit to my girlfriend Joyce today....it felt like I went to the plant shop and the farmer's market by the time I left.
I know I've mentioned before that she loves to share, and so I came away laden down with good stuff...good stuff I tell you.

My weekend

Don't know about you, but my weekend was crammed full of activities...there was even one event I couldn't attend...bummer.
Hope all the fathers had a wonderful day yesterday...it was the first Father's Day without Steve and it felt really strange not being able to pick the phone up and wish him a happy day....daughter dear was feeling a bit down, but she is okay now.
As usual I was invited to the church's Father's Day luncheon which is always lots of fun with great food and an afternoon of entertainment.
My plate of deliciousness....yes the ham slices are for you know who...I brought them home in a piece of foil paper I had stored in my handbag....he was extremely happy to see me when I returned home.

On Saturday I attended a car boot sale which was a tad disappointing, since most of the vendors stalls were filled with clothes.  There were very few vendors with food, plants, books and household items.
I did find a few vegetables to purchase....thank goodness.

I asked a very nice guy if I could take a photo of his stall, and he said yes.
Look at the beautiful paintings on these dried coconut shells....impressive.

The rains have finally started up, and I am so happy that this awful drought will be banished finally.
I have seeds................

..........................and several seedlings to plant...I gave some away to my girlfriend since she was able to get her garden ready a week ago.
I am still working on preparing the side garden and still fighting with the last remaining stand of rogue heliconias.  I can't wait to get them all out so I can plant some beautiful ginger lilies.

I worked so hard in the garden Saturday afternoon...pulling my back in the process, that I wasn't feeling well enough to attend a beach get-together in the evening.  My friends Gay and Naomi have been traveling the world, and were on the island to visit friends and family....I felt bad I didn't get to see them....maybe next time.

I am hoping to get lots of outdoor work done this week....keeping my fingers and toes crossed.

Bathsheba

Bathsheba

For ages now my neighbour has been inviting me to visit her beach house, but it always seemed as if it was a busy time for me and it was never possible....until.....last Sunday.
Though it was a cloudy day, it was perfect for me, and so we headed out with our neighbourhood friend Amelia, who was visiting for a few weeks.  Amelia was once our in-between neighbour when she lived here on the island, and we always enjoy sharing her company whenever she is visiting.
With my neighbour driving, we gals set off to the east coast to the quaint little fishing village of Bathsheba located in the parish of St. Joseph.

Bathsheba's  coastline is made up of dramatic rock formations against which the Atlantic rollers break in cascades of foam.

The iconic mushroom-shaped Bathsheba Rock
One would think that these scattered rock formations along the shore are huge boulders washed up to shore but they were actually formed when they broke away from an ancient coral reef thousands of years ago.

Scattered along the shore like that they looked like a giant game of Bocce.

Bathsheba is approximately fourteen (14) miles from our capital city Bridgetown and is a renowned landmark on our east coast.
The east coast is rugged and breathtakingly beautiful with waves crashing to shore in heavy heaves.

According to legend, Bathsheba, the wife of King David bathed in milk to keep her skin soft and beautiful. The surf covered white waters are said to resemble Bathsheba's bath in appearance and therefore this small village was named Bathsheba.
This is where many Barbadians spend their weekends and vacations, with many owning holiday homes or what we call bay houses.  This is where they come to escape the stress of life, to recuperate, to rest, to breathe fresh wholesome air, clean and cleansing from its voyage over thousands of miles of open sea, wild, raw and invigorating, just what the doctor ordered for good health.

The Soup Bowl
World Class surfing
For the surfers, Bathsheba is known as the "Soup Bowl" and several local and international competitions like the International Pro Surfing Classic take place here.
Barbados sits apart in the Atlantic Ocean from the rest of the Caribbean islands, and thus is the first landfall for the ferocious wind blown waves that cross nearly three thousand miles in the open Atlantic with nothing in the way to stop them, before they break here at Bathsheba...one of Barbados's, or dare I say one of the Caribbean's best surfing locations.

The surfers love the Soup Bowl with its natural exhilarating big and powerful breakers that smash on to the shore. The powerful surf conditions at the Soup Bowl is a right point surf break with a reef break and a coral bottom featuring approx. 100m length rides and waves sometimes over 30ft.
Several times a year, this quaint little fishing village becomes a hive of activity when the surf contests are held.

Okay enough about the Soup bowl and surfing, let's get back to why we are here in the first place.

As we drove into the driveway there was a street character with a tame monkey sitting on his lap....I figured I would have time later to take his photo but he disappeared for the rest of the day....I know, I know, I should have grabbed the opportunity there and then, and now I'm cussing myself.

It was a luncheon treat for Amelia, and she enjoyed the many tasty delights that we had prepared for her.
We sat on the breezy patio and enjoyed a lovely lunch....above is the delicious salmon salad entree.
My full plate of rice and peas, macaroni pie, scalloped potatoes, baked chicken with stuffing and a fresh tossed salad....yum yum.
After lunch I took a walk around the village to catch a few photos.
On the inland side are cute little chattel houses.....

....nestled on the hillside

There are also several Guest houses and beach houses where locals and tourists frequent.

St. Aidan's Church

I didn't see any crabs that day, but I saw lots of crab holes along the grassy areas by the shore.

Literally everywhere on the beach was strewn with the dreaded sargassum seaweed.

The coconut tree branches are swept by the fierce winds and most are permanently facing inland.

Due to the ferocious Atlantic waves, swimming at Bathsheba is not advisable since there are rip tides and undertows that make it dangerous along this part of the coast.

Instead one can relax and soak in one of the inshore pools surrounded by boulders. These pools are Barbados' answer to a hot tub....slip in and unwind for a while, breathe the clean Atlantic air, sip a drink or two or three.
These pools I've been told host the most awesome rum punch parties....what an unique experience.

'There's naught, no doubt, so much the spirit calms as rum and true religion' - Lord Byron

This scene with the decayed house on the boulder was actually used in one of the episodes of The Bold and The Beautiful when the show visited the island several years ago.

Bathsheba is a favourite stop for bus excursions.

Our local transport buses were running like clockwork every hour.

Tourists were also sightseeing through the town.
In the background is Dina's Bar & Restaurant.
There is also a hiking trail that follows the old train line which ran through the village from 1881- 1937.

All too soon it was time to leave, and as we packed up the car to head for home, I had a last look around....vowing to myself that I would be back soon.

Happy Birthday to MEEEEE!!

As usual every year, the first Birthday card to arrive is from my supermarket.
Do you think they chose this card with the cute dog especially for me?
After all I believe the staff all know that I'm always there shopping for my boy Brownie.
This year the poem inside is really cute:

LOOKING FOR ME?
It's my day
To get away
Here
There or somewhere
To hide confide or joyride
To whisper listen or remember
To call the shots
And say it loud and clear
IT'S MY BIRTHDAY

The Merry Month of May

The Very Merry Month of May is over.
I can't believe it, where did this month go?
So many things have happened that I haven't posted about but need to be documented, since this blog serves as my journal as well.
May 1st was my usual Swap and Tea Party, and wouldn't you know it, I have no photos to share, how weird is that?
The photo above is the day after....an empty centrepiece made from microwave plates I collected from garage sales, and one was given to me by my friend whose funeral I attended recently.
I used  dessert glasses with stems between the layers and applied them with Elmer's Tac & Stik to hold them in place....so easy to take apart for storage afterwards.
My girlfriends and I chowed down on Lemon tartlets, mini cupcakes, marshmallow pie, sandwiches, veggie samosas, coconut bread, conkies, tuna bakes, apple cobbler, and a few others that I don't remember right now.
The swap was lovely and I ended up with a few herbs for my garden, veggies, a battery operated motion sensor light, glass vases and some beautiful glass stones.

The day after the swap my tv (smart????) refused to come on, and after googling the problem I asked my techie friend to swing by and check it out.
All you need to know is that the "hidden" power button which works as the override when the remote doesn't work could not be found by yours truly...but yet there it is big and bold on the left of my friend's hand.....say nothing...I won't hear you.

Mid month, Beast was scheduled for his annual road worthy checkup at my friendly mechanic.
He may be an old boy (Beast not my mechanic) but he still works great.
Needs a new paint job and a few new parts but will still get me from point A to point B safely.
Image borrowed from Earthsky
Saturn, the ringed planet was also remarkably visible this month (22nd-23rd).
Earth passed between the planet and the sun which would have made the planet the brightest it has ever been and viewing would have been perfect all night long.
My poor telescope was so far amongst other items in storage that it was a bother to take it out, so I didn't get to see it up close.

I did have an open invitation to view at the Observatory but I just couldn't deal with the crowds.

There was also a strange day on the 27th, one I shall refer to as The Day of Flies. Had no idea where the flies were coming from or how they were getting into the kitchen since the windows are all screened.
Another girlfriend told me she had the same thing happen to her a couple of months ago.

We took a friend who is leaving the island after pursuing her studies for a year at university to dinner on Friday night....we are going to miss her.

My fat mahi mahi fish fingers with a delightful in-house tartar sauce.
We had a lovely evening.

Of course Mr. Brownbie is still ruling the roost and being a good boy.

And so we say goodbye to The Merry Month of May 2015.
