Avocados? I think not

Every year, my neighbour's avocado tree is laden with the best tasting fruit around.
A nice creamy  mellow textured flesh, that eats like butter....the perfect accompaniment to a fresh salad.
I am the beneficiary extraordinaire......I always accept graciously when they are handed to me over the garden wall....."These are for you neighbour."......words I wait to hear all year.
It's avocado season, and I have refused to buy any from the wayside vendors or the supermarket, because I know from whence mine will come.
To my great dismay, I heard Brownie barking incredibly loud, and throwing a hissy fit yesterday afternoon.  Couldn't figure out what on earth was the matter, maybe the meter man had ventured too far from reading the meter, maybe a child had come in to retrieve a ball, maybe my other neighbour had friends over and they were making a racket on their patio.....maybe.......Brazen!!!

Yes, there was the criminal sitting in my neighbour's avocado tree, biting and throwing all of "my avocados" on the ground.
I gasped in disbelief.
My neighbour was not at home, and Brazen knew this, so no matter how much I tried to scare him away, he just sat and ate "my avocados" with the meanest look of contempt on his face.
How many avocados do you see left?
Avocados for me this year.....I think not.

Helen, I hope you read this, and take pity on me, your poor avocado-less friend.

  1. Good on Brownie for letting you know but it's a shame he's not Superdog. He would have flown up there and chased that Brazen monkey. How cheeky!

  2. Brownie would take him down....if only he could reach him.
Brazen has thrown fruit at me already while i worked in the garden....he's got a lot of nerve.

    1. Nice to see you here Angus...welcome.
The monkeys on the island eat all fruits, even avocados...that's why they're such a pest to the farmers.
I would not have minded if he were eating just one or two avocados, but just biting a piece out of each one and then throwing the rest away made me very upset. They're notorious for doing this.

  4. You need a Super Soaker water gun. Would that help deter them?

  5. Tammy, if he comes by while I'm watering the garden, I usually aim the hose at him as well, but he moves very quickly. Not only that, he is very vindictive, so he eventually does something awful to get back at me.....like pull up my plants, jump and break the branches, come into the garden to get at Brownie, or even throw half eaten fruit at me...he's not a nice fellow.
But I will get the super soaker water gun for the pigeons that want to take over my roof...thanks for the idea.

  6. We don't have monkeys to worry about in Australia, but our possums can be a bit of a pest, and where I live (Brisbane) the flying foxes often seem to take that one bite out of a mango then throw it away. Very irritating...

    1. Gosh. An Ozzie saying something about a possum. I thought that you left that to those of us in New Zealand!

  7. All of a sudden the pigeons in my garden seem benign and friendly. I've a feeling that Brazen and I would not get along at all well.
