Best In Show Judge Betty Regina Leininger picked the winner from the final group of seven.
This was the record 14th time a wire fox terrier has won at the nation's top dog show. Sky has won 129 best in shows overall, and was ranked as the country's No. 1 show dog last year.
There were 2,845 dogs entered in the show. They were eligible in 190 breeds and varieties.

Judge Leininger took more than two minutes to make her decision, but in the end it was Sky that left her nearly speechless, saying "This was her night.  She looked the best tonight from every angle. She is a beautiful wire. She really made us proud.” For reserve, or runner-up, Leininger chose Ally, a standard poodle.

It came as no surprise that Sky the five year old terrier won, since she was a favourite heading into the competition.  Terriers have won 46 times, the most of any group.

As winner, she will appear on a host of television shows, make an appearance at the Empire State Building and have a steak at Sardi's for her reward.

The Westminster is the show of shows in the purebred dog world.

Way to go, Sky!

  1. Hi, I just had to bounce over when I saw on Angus's blog that you had posted about Sky! Of course, you know that I am a very bouncy wire-haired fox terrier, but I have many friends of all different breeds, including those brilliant PONs in France profonde, so I have to try not to be breedist. But of course I do think us WFT's are a breed apart. "You can say that again!" says Gail, with a certain tone in her voice. Oh dear, she has been looking at the photos of Sky, and is wondering if my legs could look like that if back-combed…Like she thinks I'm going to stand still that long...
    Toodle pip!

    1. Oh Bouncing Bertie you made me laugh quite loudly I must admit....'try not to be breedist." is sooo funny.
Yes, I agree that you that WFT's are a breed apart, and as evidenced by your comment you feel even more so after Sky's win.
As for Mummy Gail, I know that she agrees with you wholeheartedly.
My boy Brownie is not too enthused with this topic, but none the less he says hello and sends some tail wags your way.
For the record, you should give Mum a chance to back-comb your legs and see if you like it.
Love from Barbados....thanks for popping by.

  2. I'm sure, Virginia, that wire-haired fox terriers are very beautiful and that Sky was a worthy winner but, to be honest, they rather leave me cold. They have a sort of manicured perfection about them and I prefer something a little more, how shall I say, emotional.

    1. Sorry that you are not enthused with the wired-haired fox terriers but in my opinion all dogs are cute and they all have their individual mannerisms which makes them as different as can be.
I'm sure if you met Sky, she would drop her "breedist" demeanour and lick your face all over with tons of emotion.
