A collection is a collection.......

I have been collecting Japanese blue and white porcelain for many years.  What the older folk would refer to as "ornaments" and "thingamabobs", are really collectibles for me.
I have come to harsh words with airline officials regarding my trophy pieces when homeward bound after an exotic shopping trip to seek out these treasures.
My friends, whenever stuck for what kind of gift to bestow upon me, always felt safe in adding another piece to my collection.
It all started with one piece.  Years ago, actually many moons ago, I suspect around 1989 or so, a friend of mine gave me the large Japanese fisherman with fish baskets on the second shelf as a thank you for my help on  a project......and that's when the madness began.   Twenty plus years later, I'm still at it.
However, my étagère is now full to capacity and I have implemented  a "cease and desist" policy to myself and my friends.

Then look what shows up in my inbox...a sale flyer......do you see that gorgeous piece in the middle?  Wouldn't that look great with my other pieces?
I HAVE to make room for that beauty.

My oh my, what's a girl to do???

I took a drive out to the store to see if I could get my hands on this beauty, but this is what I found....

A lovely wooden piece with a  dark grey/black painted design.........nothing like what I had anticipated.......it was neither porcelain, nor blue and white............DARN!!!
Disappointment set in, but then I reminded myself that it was probably a good thing, because there was no more space on the étagère to accommodate it anyhow.
The "cease and desist" policy had been adhered to..............at least for now.

    1. Sorry Mark, I didn't purchase it, since it was not what I was looking for......now..... if it were blue and white Japanese porcelain, it would definitely have found its way home with me.

  2. I like blue and white porcelain too. I'm not really a collector, though.

    1. They are really nice aren't they? My girlfriend has hers displayed along the tops of her kitchen cupboards.

  3. The shop saved you from yourself :)

I like blue and white too, but thank goodness I don't have the collecting gene, or my home would be even more full of stuff than it is already!

    1. Jenny, this is the ONLY collection that I am left with now.
I used to collect stamps, coins, miniature liquors, matchbooks and souvenir spoons.
My house is decorated in the minimalist style.....no clutter......I just don't do clutter.
You are so right, the shop did save me from myself!!

  4. I had the same problem with owls some years ago. I managed to acquire a very small collection of owls (of all shapes, sizes and materials) that appealed to me. Next thing I knew they were appearing from left, right and centre as everyone thought it a safe (and easy) bet for the next twenty birthdays / Christmases. Like you, I had to cry 'Desist' and most of them went to a market stall - the remainder are up in the loft. I'm scared to get them out for fear they will trigger another batch.

    1. Nice to see you here.....you made me chuckle.
I know so well of what you speak.... I guess if I were your friend back then, you would have received an owl or twenty from me!!!
I do "clear" out some of my pieces sometimes, by sharing with my friends who are now starting their own collections as well.

  5. I'm not a collector either although CJ has pointed out that I 'collect' CDs and books but I don't count that as collecting. I can't claim that my house is minimalist though but The Cottage in New Zealand is not cluttered. I do like the blue and white ware by the way.

My Japanese blue and white porcelain pieces are quoted in my will...
